Still a few spots open in the swim clinic, Friday 11/12

Just a reminder that there is a 2 part swim clinic with underwater video taping at BTW HS this Friday and next! There are still a few slots available, mainly during the 4 to 5 pm hour, and the 7 to 8 hr. You need to sign up for a slot in order to be videoed. You can also participate in an 'in-the-water' clinic either before or after your video taping. You do not need to be at the pool for 4 hrs!

Please contact Coach Jason Sauer as soon as possible to grab the last few remaining spots. You can reach Jason by phone: 760-0909 or by email: hornets swimming@gmail.com. Click on the link for all the details: http://www.tulsamastersswimclub.com/SwimEvents/Clinic/LAStrokeClinic.pdf

Hope to see you at the pool!

To ALL SWIMMERS!!!

Coach Jason Sauer, Booker T. Washington HS and Tulsa Masters Swim Club coach, is conducting a Long Axis stroke clinic in November. 'Long axis' means he will cover the strokes of freestyle and backstroke. The cost is only $20 if you sign up before November 5th.

This is a 2 part clinic held the evenings of Friday, November 12 and Friday November 19 at Booker T. Washington HS. The clinic is open to all swimmers, whether you are a competitive masters swimmer, triathlete, or fitness swimmer. You will be videoed underwater during the 1st day of the clinic and receive a copy of your DVD the next week. There will also be 'in the water' stroke clinics during both sessions.

Please see the link below for specific information about the clinic:
http://www.tulsamastersswimclub.com/SwimEvents/Clinic/LAStrokeClinic.pdf

You need to contact Jason Sauer to secure your spot in the clinic. Jason can be reached at 918-760-0909 or by email: hornetswimming@gmail.com. Space is limited to 48swimmers, so please make your reservation early!

This is an excellent opportunity to see how you look in the water and gain feedback on ways to improve your stroke. I can personally testify as to how important it is to see yourself swim. I realized I have developed some bad habits over the years. The bad habits can be corrected and hopefully make me a better swimmer AND prevent injuries!!

Thanks for your time! Hope to see you at the clinic!

"Test Your Skills with Long Distance Pool Events"

"Test Your Skills with Long Distance Pool Events"

PARTICIPATE WITH TULSA MASTERS SWIMMERS IN THE NATIONAL POSTAL 3000 or 6000 Yd SWIM

Saturday November 13th at the Jenks High School 25 Yd Pool, 7:45 am.

WHAT IS A “POSTAL SWIM”? Postal swims are long distance pool events that are sponsored by United States Masters Swimming. An individual or team swims the distance event in their own pool, then sends their results to the USMS team that is sponsoring the specific event. The event sponsors tabulate and post results on the USMS website as well as email and/or mail results to all officially entered swimmers. There are several different "postal events" scheduled throughout the year and include:

January: One Hour Swim: Swim as far as possible in one hour. TMSC will offer this swim on a Saturday morning in January at the Jenks indoor 25 yd pool.

May through September: 5000 M and 10,000 M distances. This event must be swum in a 50M pool. TMSC hopes to do this in the new Jenks High School indoor 50M pool next summer.

October through mid-November: 3000 and 6000 yard distances. This event must be swum in a 25 Yd pool. TMSC is offering this event on Saturday November 13th at the Jenks High School indoor 25 yd pool.

December: the "Pentathlon" that includes events in each stroke along with an IM event.

These events are a great way for distance swimmers and triathletes to participate nationally in a long pool swim without having to travel.

Many distance swimmers use these events to track their progress from year to year. Note: You can participate in the TMSC event without entering the national "race"! Details below.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE 3K/ 6K EVENT: Any USMS registered swimmer who is up to the challenge of a 3000 or 6000 yard swim! If you're already registered for 2010--great. If not, registration for 2011 begins on November 1, 2010--so you can register starting 11-1-10 on line at www.USMS.org or on the deck prior to the start of the 3K/ 6K event. Registration will cover the rest of 2010 and all of 2011.

COST OF THE EVENT: If you are registered for the TMSC Saturday morning workout group at the Jenks pool, there is no charge for swimming the event. If you are not, there will be a $5 charge which will be collected before the start of the event. If you enter the national competition, there is an additional fee that you will need to send with your national entry form to this year's national sponsor (see below).

NATIONAL TABULATION: If you want to enter your time in the National USMS event, you must send a completed entry form. An entry form is available at: http://www.usms.org/longdist/ldnats10/#postals. We will also have copies at the pool on the day of the event. Cost to enter the national event is $12 for individuals and $18 for relays and must be sent to this year's host team: Masters of South Texas.

THE EVENTS: The events are individual 3000 or 6000 yd swims or a team competition. (The 3000 is 120 lengths and the 6000 is 240 lengths of a 25 yd pool).

There are 3 team events: 3 men, 3 women, 4 mixed (2 men/ 2 women). Each team member must enter the individual event and be registered with the same club. The youngest member’s age shall determine the team’s age group.

WHEN & WHERE: Saturday, November 13th, 7:45 am.

Jenks High School Pool located at 205 East B Street in Jenks.

From Riverside Drive in Tulsa: Cross the 96th St bridge into Jenks. Once over the bridge, turn right (north) at the first light, then left (west) at the stop sign onto "B Street". Go west on "B Street" until you reach "Birch" (you will pass the High School, but if you go over the RR tracks, you've gone too far). Turn right (north) onto "Birch", go past the construction site and turn right into the parking lot just north of the construction site. Follow the signs to the pool from there.

For a detailed map of the campus, see at http://www.jenkscommunityed.com/campusmap.pdf. The pool is in building 7.

We will open the building at 7:45. We will start the first heat by 8:15.

WHAT TO BRING: You'll need to bring your own counter (i.e., a person to count your laps) if you plan to enter the national competition. He/ she should be equipped with a clip board and pencil. Bring whatever food and drink you need for the event. We’ll provide watches and lap counting sheets.

DURING THE EVENT: YES, you can take water/food or bathroom breaks, but the clock doesn't break with you.

CONTACT: Leslie Sauber (918-808-4384 or leslie.sauber@att.net) by November 7th so that we’ll know how many to expect. Please let us know which distance you plan to do and give an estimated finish time so that we can group swimmers in heats by time.

For more information about the national event to to http://www.usms.org/longdist/ldnats10/#postals and scroll down to the 3K/ 6K postal event.

Hope you will join us for a long swim!!!

Sent on behalf of Leslie Sauber. Thanks for organizing the event, Leslie!

Native Oklahoma Swimmer & BTW graduate featured in USMS Mag

Hey Oklahoma swimmers!

The Sept/Oct of the USMS 'Swimmer' magazine features Tyler Blessing demonstrating the proper backstroke. Tyler grew up in Tulsa and swam at B.T. Washington High School. Tyler's name is still listed on the BTW record board. He also swam with Don Nelson's kids on their USS team.

Tyler's parents still live in Tulsa. His mother called Don saying she would like to get several copies of the magazine. Please contact me if you would like to donate your issue of 'Swimmer' magazine to Mrs. Blessing. If you plan to go the Edmond meet this coming Sunday or to the Senior Games meet at BTW next week (October 13), Don and I will be at both those events.

FIRE SALE!!!

Bargain priced Tallchief and McClure t-shirts for sale!

I have a few shirts left over from our two summer events. They are for sale for $5!

Both shirts are 100% cotton. My shirts haven't shrunk with washing, but someone else told me theirs did.

Both shirts were designed by our very own creative wild woman, Jocelyn Wood.

The TMSC logo is printed on both shirts.

The Tallchief Open Water Challenge shirts are a dark charcoal grey shirt with white lettering. The 'trademark' Tallchief turtle is on the front of the shirt; the turtle, the sponsors, and other info is on the back of the shirt. A very cool shirt!

I have 1 small, 1 large, 1 XL, and 10 medium shirts left from the Tallchief event.

The ' 30th Annual Oklahoma Memorial Championship at McClure' is a white shirt with yellow and blue lettering. The TMSC logo is very prominent on the back of this shirt. This shirt commemorates the 30 years TMSC has hosted a summer meet and the 'almost that many years' the meet has been held at McClure. Also a cool shirt. They design was kind of my idea, but Jocelyn made it look good!

I ONLY HAVE 2 MEDIUM SHIRTS left from the McClure meet.

First come, first serve.

Email me if you'd like a shirt and I'll save one for you! Only $5!!

THANKS!!

Update on Fall 2010 swimming options in Tulsa!

Good evening my swimming friends!

Just want to give you an update on your options to swim in Tulsa now that 'Summer' is over. Yes, it is still August, but we can no longer swim outside at McClure, so in my mind, 'summer' is over! The 1st three options are for organized swimming workout groups.

Option 1: Booker T. Washington HS- weekday evenings The pool is available starting THIS WEEK, August 23rd. New this year: 5 nights available! Monday through Friday evenings, 5:00- 7:00 pm. NO, you do not have to do a 2 hour workout, but the pool is available during those times. Coach on deck is Jason Sauer, BTW HS coach and owner of SWIM 201. You can reach him at swim201@gmail.com or (918) 760-0909. Cost to swim is $5/ swim, or $60/ month for coached workouts, or $40/ month for just a place to swim (no coaching). You must join USMS, www.usms.org.

Option 2: Jenks HS- Saturdays only
Don't forget, you can join us on Saturdays at Jenks HS, 8:00 to 10 am. To sign up, go to http://jenkscommunityed.com/classes.asp?categoryid=24&categoryname=Master%20Swim.
The cost is $10.50 per month ($10.00 if you are a Jenks resident). You MUST sign up through the Jenks Community Ed office, either online, or over the phone, 299-4415 x2247. I cannot take any money at the pool!! :) You must also join USMS, www.usms.org

Option 3: Hutcherson YMCA- Weekday mornings If you are a YMCA member & like to workout early, there is a 'masters swim class' at the Hutcherson YMCA Monday-Wednesday-Friday mornings 5:45 am to 6:45 am. The coach on deck is Lucas Meyers. You will find a fun group to swim with early in the morning and a good coach to motivate you. The cost is $15/ month in addition to your Y membership.

Other not so organized swimming options are the various health clubs in town: St. John, St. Francis Health Zone, Gold's Gym, Patti Wilson YWCA, Hutcherson Y (in the evenings). Thornton Y is currently out of commission but should be back in business in the next month or so. Also, the University of Tulsa's pool is available for a semester fee, even if you aren't a student, employee or alumni. Tulsa Area Triathletes have pool time at ORU one night a week and an option to purchase a 'membership' to use the pool at other times.

It may not be easy, but it is possible to swim in this town!!! Enjoy the ride! The new Jenks Aquatics Center is on the very near horizon. Projected opening late March or early April 2011!
Let me know if you have any questions. Hope to see you at a pool.

Keep Swimming!

Summers over! NO MORE McCLURE! :{

Good evening my McClure swimming buddies!

It is official! Summer is over! No more workouts at McClure Park Pool! We found out today that the Tulsa Parks Dog Splash event is tomorrow, August 22. McClure will be drained for the winter sometime this coming week. Our summer swimming season is over, just like that! We honestly thought we had the pool one more week, but obviously there was a miscommunication.

Thanks to all of you who participated this summer. Thanks to Coach Scott for his help this summer. I had so much fun swimming with all of you. It was good to have some new faces in the pool, too. I hope you will continue swimming and participating in Tulsa Masters/ USMS events.

Next up is a return to Booker T. Washington HS for some of us. I haven't talked to Coach Jason yet about the schedule. I'll try to confirm the details very quickly and email you all. TPS students start school Monday, so we should be able to swim this week if Jason will be having evening workouts.

Don't forget, you can join us on Saturdays at Jenks HS, 8:00 to 10 am. To sign up, go to http://jenkscommunityed.com/classes.asp?categoryid=24&categoryname=Master%20Swim.The cost is $10.50 per month ($10.00 if you are a Jenks resident). You MUST sign up through the Jenks Community Ed office, either online, or over the phone, 299-4415 x2247. I cannot take any money at the pool!! :)

If you are a YMCA member & like to workout early, there is a 'masters swim class' at the Hutcherson YMCA Monday-Wednesday-Friday mornings 5:45 am to 6:45 am. The coach on deck is Lucas Meyers. You will find a fun group to swim with early in the morning and a good coach to motivate you. The cost is $15/ month in addition to your Y membership. You will find me at this workout from time to time.

You can find some masters swimmers in the evenings at Hutch as well. We have to work around the splash classes, but there are several people that try to meet there & do a workout together. Seems like Tues/Thurs nights are the best as the splash class doesn't start until 7 pm on those nights. They start at 6:00 on MWF nights. When class is in session, there is only one lap lane available. Can get a little crowded! Just have to be a YMCA member, no extra fee.

Thanks again for a great summer! Keep swimming!

(less than) 2 MORE WEEKS of McCLURE SWIMMING & other info!

Hello, my swimming friends!

I meant to send this Sunday evening and may have sent something else instead. My brain is truly overloaded right now. Please read on.....

(warning--- this is a long note, but of course contains VERY important information!)

Hard to believe we only have TWO weeks left to swim at McClure! The majority of you have hung on this long, so don't quit now!! If you haven't been to the pool in a while, please join us for the last few days of outdoor swimming. There is SOME hope that the water temp will be cooler this week with the slight break in the heat and cooler night time temps.

The good news is that Coach Scott is back from his roller coaster riding jaunt around the country. You won't have to put up with MY workouts anymore! Scott will be on deck every night for the last two weeks. Many great reasons to come to McClure: 1) Scott will be writing the workouts-- YAY! 2) Scott will be on deck to give you all the stroke help you can handle. 3) FUN! Despite the hot water, we manage to have fun swimming every night. So come join us.

NOW for the schedule leading up to and including the meet, which is THIS coming weekend, FRIDAY night and SATURDAY, August 20 & 21st!!! Lots of info, please bear with me!
**** If you plan to swim in the meet, but haven't yet sent your entry to Leslie, bring it to me tomorrow evening. I will drop them by Leslie's house on my way home. IF you just can't make yourself swim in the meet, we can REALLY REALLY use your help as timers. See below for more details.

Schedule:
1> Already mentioned, Scott is back every night this week (and next).
2> Rhonda's merry elves should be placing the starting blocks at the deep end of the pool sometime this week.
3> A few of us will be picking up the touch pads from Union HS on Wednesday evening prior to workout. We will arrive at McClure to transfer those touch pads to the guards room where they will remain until Saturday. We will need help UNLOADING the touch pads when we arrive at the pool. If you are swimming Wednesday evening, please offer your assistance to us when we arrive. THANK YOU!
4> THURSDAY NIGHT, August 19th: WE NEED TO PUT IN ALL THE LANE ROPES. If everyone helps, it will go fast and we can still do a workout. Please make an effort to come to the pool Thursday evening so we can complete this task quickly.
5> FRIDAY NIGHT: THE MEET! This is the distance night, 800 meter free & 1500 meter free. Warm up is at 5 pm, 1st heat starts at 6 pm. If a distance swim isn't your thing, please come to the pool to help time. We won't be using electronic timing that night, so we need at least 2 timers on every lane and we will probably use all 8 lanes. Some of the swimmers may also need someone to count for them. No experience necessary, we can train you quickly if you are new to this sort of thing. Twisting the arms of your loved ones to help us is also encouraged! :D The group usually goes to dinner together after completion of the swims.
6> SATURDAY: THE BIG DAY! Possibly the last USMS sanctioned event at McClure Park Pool. You don't want to miss this!

Event Highlights:
--> A limited number of commemorative t-shirts will be available to swimmers & volunteers!
--> The water slide will be open during the meet! We will have lifeguards on duty to protect us from ourselves and to watch over your children. Yes, your family members are encouraged to spend the day at the meet. The shallow area of the pool is available for play and the slide will be open.
--> We want EVERYONE- swimmers, timers, anyone able to complete a 50 meter swim- to participate in the last event of the day, the 200 Free relay. If you don't have a relay team going for Top 10, this event is for FUN. You don't have to dive off the blocks, water starts okay. In fact, no one will be diving off the side of the shallow end-- USMS rules! Have that suit on and be ready to swim in the last official masters relay at McClure Park Pool.
-->And last but not least, the post meet celebration will take place at Leslie's air conditioned home! Main dish & drinks provided. We need YOU to provide the side dishes and desserts.

NOW for the Saturday schedule:
1) 8:30 am: Drop off your FOOD at Leslie's house on your way to the pool. Leslie's address-
724 S. Sandusky Ave. Leslie is just north of 11th Street, between Harvard & Yale, about a mile from the pool. Someone will be at Leslie's house until about 9:45 to accept your food.
2) 9:00 am: Meet registration, warm up begins.
3) 10:00 am: Meet begins.
4) 2:00 pm: Post Meet Celebration at Leslie's house!!!
In case you STILL haven't looked at the entry form, here is the link:
http://tulsamsc.blogspot.com/ ( just click on the forms & print them as needed.)
I think I got it all. Thanks for your undivided attention. Please contact me or Leslie, leslie.sauber@att.net, if you have any questions.

I will see you at the pool this week!!!

the dog days of August at McClure!

Hello McClure swimmers!

Yep, we are still swimming at our favorite outdoor pool for the month of August. Thanks to Matt, Sarah & John for providing the soaker hose to help cool us a little bit at the shallow end of the pool. The water temp was tolerable last week. I'm not sure we can expect the same this week, so bring your ice cold drinks to have on the edge of the pool. But nothing that will cause an abnormal physiological response and create a medical emergency, please! :)

Scott Z. will miss the next two weeks as he is vacationing with his family before his son returns to school. BUT.... he will make it up to us the last two weeks of August by being on deck all four nights of those two weeks.

In the meantime, there will be no shortage of workout ideas. I'm open to suggestions, so don't be bashful. We will adjust the intensity according to the pool temp. I'll arrive armed with three different workouts for your choosing. Just remember this is masters swimming... you really can do what you want to do! Long gone are the days when coaches threw chairs in the pool for not following commands. (Yes, I really did have a coach throw a chair in the pool during my high school practice!)

See you at the pool!

A PLEA FOR THE PERFECT MASTERS SWIMMING COACH (Reflections from Leslie Sauber)

A PLEA FOR THE PERFECT MASTERS SWIMMING COACH (Reflections from Leslie Sauber)

After last Thursday's TMSC meeting, I had some thoughts about the group's view of coaching. Every adult swimmer has different goals and I sincerely think that the right coach can help each swimmer meet those goals. Here's my pitch for hiring the perfect Masters Swimming Coach:

1) Goal: To improve technique. Certainly beginning swimmers seek a coach for work on stroke mechanics. However, for seasoned (and let's get real--I mean for aging) swimmers, improvement of technique may be the only way to keep swimming on the same level. We need someone who can teach old dogs new tricks.

2) Goal: To swim for fitness. Yes, we all want to be fit but it's so much easier to sit on the couch than to swim. When my alarm goes off in the morning, I mechanically get up and go through the pre-swimming-household duties such as feeding the dogs, making the coffee... Sometimes I'm not even sure why I'm rushing around so--but in the back of my mind, I know that if I get to the pool on schedule there will be work-out buddies and a coach to help motivate me. A coach is the best way to make a team cohesive.

3) Goal: To compete at the top of your game. I don't think that we ever grow out of that phase of "Watch me swim, mommy!" Knowing that the coach is watching the swimmers and clock definitely makes me swim harder--especially on those days when I'm really tired and would rather slog through the yardage. The right coach can really encourage and motivate his/her swimmers and can challenge each swimmer to perform at his/her best.

4) Goal: To get out of the house and be more social. Where else would you be in a group of 20 - 80+ year olds, men, women, professionals, students, laborers, retirees, stay-at-home parents, nuns, floozies, gadflies--all of whom are active, vital people? In non-coached work-outs, swimmers of a feather flock together ending up with "slow, medium, and fast" lanes and little mixing of the team. But with the right coach, even the fastest swimmers can be challenged by swimming against the slowest swimmers. A good coach can pair up a fast breaststroker with an average freestyler or have all lanes swimming on the same intervals but doing various distances. The right coach will have a pace clock embedded in his/her brain (at least metaphorically) so that the workout runs smoothly with no one having to wait for the slower swimmers.

And finally my personal favorite:

5) Goal: To have fun!!!!!! One day at the end of morning workout at Hutcherson YMCA, the coach was having us do 50s where we were to kick underwater with fins (no breath) for 25M, do a flip turn and sprint back with as few breaths as possible. (Needless to say, I could only kick underwater for 12M before gasping to the surface). After doing 2-3 of these, an unnamed swimmer (okay, it was Larry Krutka) asked our coach Lucas "What is the purpose of this set?" His reply was "To have fun." Larry then querried "But will this make us any faster?" Lucas looked puzzled. I suspect that for him, the main goal of swimming is to have fun--also my favorite reason. My more complete answer is that "Anything that makes swimming fun will keep us coming back for more. More swimming more fitness, faster swims, more technic work, meet more swimmers, have more fun." in a never-ending loop of fitness and fun (with a little pain thrown in).

I suggest that when the time comes for Jenks to hire a coach for a Masters program that we have a committee to help them review resumes and participate in interviews. We may even find that one coach is strong on technic while another is strong on training. Why not have more than one coach and have each emphasize their speciality on a selected day of the week? I would volunteer to be on such a committee.

Is everyone now convinced that we need THE PERFECT MASTES SWIMMING COACH? If so--great! get involved with the selection process. If not--I can be counted on to come up with more reasons for having a coach! :)

PS And for those of you who asked me: Yes, I can honestly say that the TMSC meeting Thursday night was definitely better than a poke in the eye. :)

TMSC events week of June 28th!

Hello, swimmers!

Another note from me.....

The forecast is looking slightly cooler this week which should help the pool temp at McClure. I encourage you to check out summer swimming at McClure if you haven't already. We've got a good group swimming there and are ready to welcome more of you. 6:30 to 8 pm, Monday - Thursday.

Please note that Coach Scott will be on deck just Wednesdays for the 3 weeks. His Park & Rec kids swim team has meets on the next 3 Monday nights. One of those nights is Swim-A-Roo, which is open to us as well. (see yesterday's email!) Scott will make it up to us later in the summer. I'll keep you advised of his schedule.

Two big events of note this week:
First off: ANGELA MARASCHAL has a birthday Tuesday, June 29th! She turns the ripe old age of 25. Angela is in charge of the workout that night. The plan is to swim and then go for a late dinner afterwards. Please join us if you can. Probably won't know where we will eat until that night, so you'll have to come to the pool to find out!

Second: Don't forget the TMSC social/ meeting on Thursday, July 1st. Come to swim, then hang out to eat pizza, and find out what's happening with the club. The eating/meeting will start around 7:30 or so.

Last, don't forget to email me your Swim-A-Roo entries. I will need those very soon. Again, see yesterday's email! :)

Thanks for reading my email. Hope to see you at the pool.

More for BTW swimmers

For those of you who don't have a place to swim until practices start at McClure on June 7th, here is an option:

The Hutcherson YMCA will allow non- YMCA members who have been swimming at BTW to use their pool for the next 2 weeks for $5/ swim. You will need to identify yourself at the front desk as masters swimmers from Booker T. Washington. I've attached Nick's note below as "proof". Nick is the Aquatics Director at Hutch. He will be out of town the rest of this week.
Hutcherson Y is located just west of the intersection of Pine and Peoria. The address is 1120 E. Pine. This is just a mile south of BTW. If you take HWY 75, get off on the Pine exit. The phone number is 382-9622. You might want to call & verify the lap swimming times, depending on when you want to swim.

Hutch has a nice pool, but only 3 lanes (25 meters) and it is very well used. There is a 'masters swim class' in the mornings from 5:45 to 6:30 am, if you like the early stuff. Coach on deck. I'm going to it this week. Good, challenging workouts. In the evenings you will find water aerobics classes. The MWF classes start at 6:00 pm. On T TH, it starts at 7 pm. These classes use 2 of the 3 lanes.

Another nice thing is that the pool is open on Sunday afternoons from 1 to 4. Three lap lanes are available from 1 to 3 pm. There will always be a least 1 lap lane available.

Hope this helps those of you who are having chlorine withdrawals! Let me know if you have any questions.

Denise

Thanks to all of you! April Pools was a great success!!

Hello,

I just want to send my sincere thanks to all of you for participating in the success of the 2010 April Pools meet whether you swam or volunteered or did BOTH! We had 37 swimmers, which is awesome for an Oklahoma masters meet. Congrats to all of you swimmers, especially those that swam in their very first masters meet. I hope you will tell your swimming friends that masters meets really aren't that scary! And thanks to all of you that answered my call for help to time or do whatever was needed. I tried to include everyone on this email but I know I'm missing a few people because I don't have their email addresses. Kelly: please thank your wife & daughter again for me; Chris: Thanks to Cindy for her flexibility & helping with the backup timer job; Scott: please thank Justin & David; Dennis Wilson's friends, David & Patti Mandrell, have been volunteering at our meets for years!; And Alejandro, was that Blanca with you?

The biggest thanks go to Gene and Annette Vickery. Because of Gene, we have electronic timing and fast, accurate results; Annette willingly serves as our head referee. There would be no meet without them.

And another big thank you to Jason Sauer, founder of SWIM 201, head coach of the Booker T. Washington HS team, and coach of the Tulsa Masters workout group at BTW HS. Jason is required by the school district to be at the pool for this meet. He thought he'd have a pretty casual day of hanging out at the pool but ended up with the starting duties when our original starter was unable to make it. Thanks, Jason. There also would be no meet if Jason was not able to be there.

We are finalizing the results and I will let you know when they are official and posted for your viewing. Watch for future emails from me about masters swimming events and activities. I believe the next meet on the radar is the Bentonville, AR meet June 12. I'll send details when I know them. Please mark your calendar for the 30th annual McClure meet in Tulsa on August 20-21st. And also for the 3rd annual Tallchief Open Water Challenge on August 29th.
Please contact me with any questions. Thanks again for a great meet!!

Timers needed: April Pools April 17

This is a plea for help from your April Pools Meet Director.

I do need timers for Saturday's meet. If you aren't swimming, but will be in town, and can spare some time at the pool, I can use you. If you are swimming, is anyone in your cheering section willing to time? Any high school students who need community service hours? Community service hours can be earned by volunteering at the meet. No experience necessary, we will train you!

The meet will start at 10 am and should be over by 2:00 pm. I will gladly accept whatever time you can give me, the entire meet or just an hour. Whatever fits your schedule.

Please know that all swimmers & volunteers will be treated to a pizza party at Joe Momma's Pizza after the meet. Refreshments will also be available at the meet.

Please contact me if you can help me Saturday.
Thanks very much!!!

Good evening, swimmers!

TPS is out of school (again!) this Good Friday. BUT.... Jason has arranged for the Friday swim workout at the UNIVERSITY OF TULSA! Yes, we can swim there Friday evening, April 2 from 5- 6:30 pm. Jason hopes TU will become the backup workout location when BTW is not available.

The pool is located in the Mabee Gym building which is just north of the football stadium. There is permit parking on the west side (main entrance of the building), also street parking. But watch the signs as campus police will get you if you park somewhere you aren't suppose to. Not sure what it will be like on a Friday afternoon. There is also a parking lot on the east side of the building. You can enter through that door as well. I think you will walk right past the campus security office on your way to the pool. I don't think you need a permit in that lot.

Happy swimming!
Denise

Swim at ORU!

Here's some information from our TAT friends:

Starting Tuesday, April 6th Tulsa Area Triathletes will be able to swim at the ORU pool between 6Pm and 7Pm. The 7Pm time will be strictly enforced on Tuesday due to Eric and Janet using the lanes for the Tri-Camp they have offered. See the Tuesday and Thursday swimming as noted here:

http://tatok.com/swim/

This gives all TAT members use of the pool 2 days a week for the cost of your membership! The staff at ORU will be requesting you show your bag tag-swim pass to get in the pool.

Not only does a membership get you into the pool facility two days a week you also get:

  • To participate in the TAT socials just like the Brick-Nick we had last week!
  • General Liability and Sports Accident insurance coverage on any TAT sponsored event, just like the Brick-Nick
  • Substantial Rudy project discounts!
  • Discounts from area swim/bike/run merchants, including Core Multisport in Tulsa. See here - http://tatok.com/sponsors/

Hutcherson YMCA Fun(d)-raising Swim Event

Good evening swimmers!

I hope everyone survived the cold & snowy weather this weekend! I do hope we've seen the last of it!

The Hutcherson YMCA is hosting a swimming related fund raising event for their 'Strong Kids' Campaign on April 3rd. The event is the brain child of new Tulsa Masters member and Hutcherson Y Aquatics Director, Nick Irving. The goal is to swim 50 50's! A donation is requested and all donations will go to directly to the Hutcherson Y kids swimming lessons scholarship fund.

This event is open to everyone. You don't have to be a Y member to participate. The event information & registration form is attached. Sounds like a fun way to contribute to the Hutcherson Y. Please contact Nick if you have any questions: nirving@ymcatulsa.org or 918.728.3959.

Have a great week!

BTW Masters Workout week 3-01 thru 3-05

Hello all,

I hope everyone did receive the email thru Denise sent last week. She has helped me again by sending me the list of email addresses for the masters and tri's. Thanks you Denise you are a gem. I have been working on TU for a while with an agreement to use but no time or days. Nick Salis is over the aquatics and he ended up going out of town or sick most all last week. I am still actively pursuing, but not too optimistic for this time out. I want to secure it for future break that we have to take, related to school being out or otherwise.

I did arrange for the pool at Memorial HS to be availible from 5-7 monday. wednesday and friday this week and next if needed. For those who dont know where it is, its next to lafortune park on the eastside. the pool door will be propped open which is on the westside of the main entrance directly in front of the big parking lot. Coach Joanna Bentley is the high school coach there and she will run the workouts. We have been working together for several months on building a swim program there. She is a very good coach. There will be a workout availible that I will send her and she will be there to address any questions or help with your swimming.

I do have workouts at mannford and sapulpa still happening. These are my age group swim team workouts, but I can have more people in the pool.
Mannford: Wednesday from 6-7 and Saturday from 9-10
Sapulpa: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30-7:30

Please let me know if you coming to Mannford and Sapulpa so I can have a workout prepared and a lane in.

I apologize for the inconvenience and I hope to see everyone very soon. --
